Gettysburg (Heros)

Tuesday, 22 May 2012 15:22
Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, as always, was a blast. We got to hang out with some of our favorite people, especially the wonderful Katy Daley from WAMU Bluegrass Country Radio. She's our favorite! Here's a shot of us from Bluegrass Today shootin' the breeze with the Seldom Scene cats back stage. We love these guys. Shout out to Rich Winklemann; Another great festival!! Breaking the Rules with the Hillbenders

Friday, 07 October 2011 00:00
Here's a cool article that the fine folks over at Bluegrass Today wrote about us at IBMA this past fall. Full text and link below:You have to give IBMA credit for listening to those who complained that new and tradition-breaking bands were locked out of prized official showcase slots in the past. But just in case anyone missed the association’s more open approach during the first four sets Monday night, the Hillbenders slammed it home with a raucous finale to Day One of the World of Bluegrass. Traditionalists are no doubt fuming this morning. Something along the lines of “that ain’t bluegrass......" Cover Lay Down - Folk blog

Monday, January 17, 2011 Monday Madness: The Hillbenders cover 80’s hit Talking In Your Sleep Up-and-coming bluegrass whiz-kids The Hillbenders have just been added to the lineup for this year’s Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, and I couldn’t be happier with their barn-burning treatment of The Romantics chart-topper Talkin’ In Your Sleep - notably, the first 45 I ever bought, way back in 1983. Play it loud while you dream of summer.

RiverFront Times, St. Louis, MO - Dec. 16 2010

Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:52
By Roy Kasten Thursday, Dec 16 2010 The old-school, Bill Monroe-blessed, one-microphone style of bluegrass isn't for the faint of heart or the under-woodshedded. The young Springfield, Missouri, pickers in the HillBenders understand what it takes. The band has the cojones and chops to gather around a single mic and let it rip, bobbing and weaving and calling and responding all the way to competition wins at both the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the National Single Microphone Championship. The HillBenders' bluegrass sound isn't loose and hippie; it's crisp and dazzling, aspiring to the tradition-bending (but not breaking) gold standard of J.D. Crowe & the New South. While the band has room to grow as a songwriting collective, its 2010 debut, Down to My Last Dollar, is packed with three-minute blasts of instrumental and vocal skill. http://www.riverfronttimes.com/2010-12-16/music/the-hillbenders/
